The Sheldon Education Foundation, and local businesses and organizations in our area offer many scholarships.

Remember your scholarship resume is what sets you apart from other students.  Be specific on the leadership positions you hold within an organization, and the activities you participate in, including the number of service hours.

Ongoing Scholarship - State of Iowa

FUTURE READY LAST DOLLAR SCHOLARSHIP

Who's Eligible? The Future Ready Iowa Last-Dollar Scholarship is for Iowans who: 

  • Are new high school graduates enrolling in an eligible program full-time in the fall after graduation or adult

    learners (20 and older) starting an eligible program at least part-time.

  • Plan to earn a certificate, diploma, or associate degree aligned with a designated high-demand job.

  • Have applied for all other available aid.   

  • File the FAFSA by the deadline

The Future Ready Iowa Last-Dollar Scholarship is available at Iowa Community Colleges and accredited private colleges in Iowa that offer eligible programs of study and that agree to provide required student services. (The scholarship program is available at NCC and WIT.) Please view the website to find out about eligible programs at all of Iowa's community colleges.  

Please note! A law passed during the 2023 legislative session requires applicants to have an EFC (report from your completed FAFSA) at or below $20,000 to qualify for the Last-Dollar Scholarship for the 2023-24 academic year. Therefore you will not be eligible for an award if you have an EFC greater than $20,000.

SEPTEMBER

P.E.O. STAR SCHOLARSHIP / DEADLINE: September 13 (This deadline has passed)

The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a non-renewable $2,500 scholarship for women who excel in leadership, academics (3.0 gpa), extra-curricular activities and community service. To apply for this scholarship, a student has to be recommended by a local P.E.O. Chapter.  If you are especially strong in Community Service and in the areas mentioned above, please fill out the application.

Submit your application to the Counselor's Office by September 13th. We will be in contact with the local PEO Chapter.

(Please note: This is a different scholarship than The P.E.O. - Sheldon Chapter DU, Scholarship. The DU scholarship is due in the spring).

Seaboard Foods Scholarship / Deadline to apply: January 15, 2025 (The application opens on November 15)

Seaboard Foods will award twenty-five (25) $1,000 scholarships to children of employees, and forty (40) scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors who live in communities where Seaboard Foods does business.

Osceola Electric Cooperative College Scholarships / Deadline: January 24, 2025

Five (5) college scholarships will be offered to sons or daughters of Osceola Electric Cooperative Members. The Cooperative sponsors three (3) $500 scholarships and through the relationship with L & O Power Cooperative and Basin Electric Power Cooperative offers two (2) additional scholarships.

Eligibility:

  • Dependent children of member-system consumers and member-cooperative employees are eligible to receive the scholarship.

  • Students enrolled or planning to enroll in a full time undergraduate or graduate course of study are eligible to apply.

Recipients are selected on the basis of your academic record, potential to succeed, leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, a statement of education and career goals, and an outside appraisal.

Iowa Farm Bureau & O'Brien County Farm Bureau/ Deadline to apply: January 29, 2025

  • To apply, students or a parent/guardian must be a current Iowa Farm Bureau member. Applicants must apply in the county where the Farm Bureau membership is held.

  • You must be a graduating high school senior, with a gpa of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

  • You must be seeking a major/minor in an ag-related field or one that will support rural Iowa.

  • You must be involved in school activities (i.e. 4-H, FFA, Honor Society, Student Council, etc.)

  • You must exhibit leadership abilities, community involvement and volunteer efforts.

  • You must demonstrate a commitment to agriculture and rural Iowa.

  • A current Official high school transcripts are required.

  • Two - character reference letters are required.

Applicants must have a minimum gpa of 2.50 (out of 4.00), be pursuing a nursing degree, and be graduating seniors from one of the following high schools:

Flight Crew United 232 Scholarship - Siouxland Community Foundation / Deadline: February 1, 2025

This Scholarship is open to students who will be pursuing a degree in a Medical/Health Career Field. Students who receive this scholarship must plan to attend: Briar Cliff University, Morningside University, St. Luke's or Western Iowa Tech Community College. John C. & Nancy J. Heuck Scholarship - Siouxland Community Foundation / Deadline: February 1, 2025

The purpose of this scholarship program is to assist graduating seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at an accredited college/university to obtain a 2- or 4-year academic degree. Applicants must be pursuing a career in agriculture business or related field.

To apply you must have a minimum 2.0 gpa, plan to pursue a career in agriculture business or related field. You must also be a graduating senior from one of the following counties: Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Dickenson, Emmet, O'Brien, Osceola or Palo Alto.

Conservation Districts of Iowa and the O'Brien County Soil & Water Conservation District Auxiliary Scholarship /Deadline: February 7, 2025

CDI is partnering with local Soil & Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) to foster the higher education endeavors of Iowa students interested in conservation and agriculture by offering scholarships. Scholarship applications are judged based on the following criteria:

Farmers Coop Society / Deadline: February 21, 2025

Farmers Coop Society will help ensure a strong future for the agricultural industry by awarding scholarships to high school students pursuing ag-related degrees or with an ag or rural background.

Applicant qualifications are: 1) be a graduating high school senior who will enroll in college or technical school in the fall of 2025, 2) possess a gpa of 3.0 or better, 3) have a designated major or interest in an ag-related field OR 4) have an Ag or rural background.

AgState Scholarship Program / Application opens: December 15. Deadline: February 28, 2025

The AgState Scholarship program supports high school seniors pursuing a future in agriculture and related fields, and to children of AgState Employees. Students who join the US Military are also eligible to apply.

Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $5,000.

LINDA K. DE GROOT - VILLAGE NORTHWEST UNLIMITED 'SPIRIT OF CARING' SCHOLARSHIP/ AWARD: $2,000  / DEADLINE: MARCH 1, 2025

In honor and memory of Linda K. De Groot, Village Northwest Unlimited will award a $2,000 scholarship to a graduating senior who will be entering a career field that focuses on working with individuals who have disabilities.  Linda was the Director of Public Relations and Business Development at Village Northwest for over 20 years. She lost her battle with cancer on October 15, 2006.  This scholarship provides an opportunity to honor and sustain her legacy of caring that Linda exemplified every day.

The O'Brien County Cattlemen's Association is offering scholarships for qualified high school seniors in O'Brien County. The purpose of these scholarships is to help educate the leaders of tomorrow who will be able to have a positive influence on the the beef industry. The scholarships will be given to men and women in the fields related to agriculture, nutrition, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Any high school senior who will be advancing his or her education by attending a school for two (2) semesters or more is eligible to apply.

    This includes technical schools as well as colleges and universities.

  • Men and women entering the fields related to the beef industry such as agriculture, nutrition, etc.

PH Balance Scholarship / Deadline: April 1

The Parent in Heaven (PH) Balance Scholarship is intended for a high school senior who, at any time in his/her life, has lost a parent or legal guardian and forever feels that void. The $1,000 scholarship is offered to students living within IRSPA Districts: One (Northwest Iowa), Two and Six. Qualifying students living or going to high school in these counties may apply for the scholarship.

You may attend a four-year college, a community college or a technical school with plans to earn a degree or diploma for your desired field of study.

O'Brien Cooperative Funeral Association Scholarship / April 1

This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to applicants pursuing a degree in a health care field. Parents of the student must be a member of the O'Brien Cooperative Funeral Association.

Applicants must write a 100-150 word essay explaining why they have chosen their field of study, and fill out the application form. You will also need two reference forms completed by adults not related to you. For this application you will need to include your high school transcript.

The deadline is April 1.

Dan Rose Memorial College Scholarship Program - Class of 2024 / Deadline: April 1

C-M-L Telephone Cooperative Association of Meriden, Iowa supports the continuing education of high school seniors whose parents or legal guardian have service(s) with C-M-L Telephone Cooperative in the Meriden, Cleghorn, Larrabee, Archer or Cherokee area.

Eligibility includes:

  • A graduating high school senior

  • Live in the household of the parents or legal guardian that are customers of C-M-L

  • Successfully complete the first semester in an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school. (You will receive the scholarship money after the first semester of college.)

O'Brien County Career Day Scholarship / April 5, 2025

In partnership with local businesses, O'Brien County Career Day awards two (2) successful applicants with a $500 scholarship to be used towards student loan debt, other educational expenses or expenses that assist in the preparation for their career or business in O'Brien County.  

Eligibility: 

  • Receive a diploma from 2017 to 2024 from a participating school (Sheldon, HMS, South O'Brien, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn)  AND

  • Be or will be employed in or self-employed in O'Brien County AND/OR

    will be a resident in O'Brien County

  • Return the following year as a guest of honor to the O'Brien County Career Day

The John N. and Irene E. Bowers Memorial Scholarship was established to recognize graduating high school seniors who have a sincere passion for the field of Nursing or Teaching/Education and have the potential to become exceptional nurses and teachers. John Bowers was a member of the Sheldon High School Class of 1937.

To be considered as a candidate for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:  

  • Must have achieved at least a 2.5 cumulative gpa in high school

  • Submit a letter of reference from a high school instructor or current employer, which should address the applicant's potential for success in your chosen field of healthcare or teaching profession.  

  • Due in the Counselor's Office not later than April 15.

SAUPE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP / DEADLINE: APRIL 15, 2025

This scholarship honors four Saupe Brothers and their wives who immigrated to this area as young couples and settled on prairie grass farms in the 1880's.  These brothers, Bruno, Otto, Frank and Emil with their wives, Sarah, Dora, Bertha and Anna actively participated in the agricultural, economic and social development of the community. 

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist deserving young persons in planning for the future and preparing themselves through post-high school education training. 

Note: This is a 4-year scholarship, distributed $1,000 per year for a four-year total of $4,000. Students entering a 1,2, or 3 year Certificate program are also eligible to apply.  

Criteria: 

  • The candidate must be in good standing of the graduating class of Sheldon High School.

  • Must display a favorable attitude toward the teachers and students in the high school environment, as well as good character.

  • Must have served in some capacity in church, community and school

  • Rank in the top third of the class.   

Please complete and return the application to the Guidance Office by April 15.  Lineal descendants of the Saupe family are not eligible, but should instead apply for the Saupe Family Scholarship.

CHARLES SCHNEIDER MEMORIAL COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP / DEADLINE: APRIL 15, 2025

The purpose of the Charles Schneider Memorial Community Service Scholarship is to recognize a Sheldon High School graduating senior who has performed significant hours (50 hours minimum in your previous two years of high school) of community service in the past year, and will be continuing your education in an accredited institution after graduating from high school. You must also demonstrate outstanding citizenship, submit a 500 word or less essay, and a resume including academics, co-curricular, and any paid or volunteer work experience.

Sheldon Education Foundation - 'SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE ARTS' / DEADLINE: APRIL 15 / CRITERIA: SENIOR WHO EXCELS IN THE ARTS) AWARD AMOUNT: $1,000

The Sheldon Community Schools Education Foundation - Scholarship for the Arts, supports the development of an outstanding high school senior who excels in the arts and will be enrolled in an accredited educational program leading to a degree in the arts. To be considered, applicants must have:

  • Achieved a 2.5 cumulative gpa in high school

  • Participated in concert band, marching band, color guard, jazz band, choir, jazz or show choir, musical, dance and/or speech contest for ALL FOUR YEARS of High school. 

  • Complete the application by April 15.

  • Submit an essay in 500 words or less (see the application for the essay topic)

  • Attach a high school transcript to the application.

  • Include your resume, including academic, co-curricular and any other participation in the arts.

The criteria for the SEA Scholarship are to be interpreted as a flexible set of guidelines which will be carefully considered in the case of each individual candidate.

  • You must be a senior in good standing of the graduating class of the Sheldon Community High School. 

  • You must have displayed a favorable attitude toward your environment, as well as good character. 

  • Applications are due in the Guidance Office by April 15th.

DUANE & HERMINA JANSSEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP /AWARD $500 / DUE: APRIL 15, 2025

(Criteria: 1st Generation College Student)

This scholarship honors the life of Hermina Janssen, who along with her husband Duane, made it their most important goal in life to assure that all five of their children attended and graduated from college, the first generation of the family to attend college.  The criteria are to be interpreted as a flexible set of guidelines which will be carefully considered in the case of each individual candidate. The candidate: 

  • Must be a first generation family member to attend a post high school institution.

  • Must be a member in good standing of the graduating senior class of the Sheldon Community High School. 

  • Should have achieved a gpa placing them in the top one-third (1/3) of their graduating class.

  • Must have served in some capacity in activities in church, community, and school

  • Must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two-year or four-year college.  

Duane & Hermina Janssen Scholarship

The application is due in the Counselor's office by April 15   

HARDING FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP / DEADLINE:  APRIL 15, 2025 

The Harding Family Scholarship was established in 2016 by Sharon R. Scharlepp to honor her ancestors, O.B. Harding and his wife, Emeline Moyer Harding, pioneer homesteaders in Osceola County, Iowa, and in honor of their son, W.L. Harding, the 22nd Iowa Governor.  

The annual scholarship amounts and recipients will vary according to the annual allocation from the trust. Preference given, but not limited to, applicants majoring in areas of agriculture or agriculture related fields of study.  You may attend any college choice - vocational, community or 4-year institution.  Scholarships are payable to the institution the recipient attends, after successful completion of the 2024 fall semester and proof of enrollment for 2024 spring semester.  One to two applicants are planned to be awarded, with the expected award from $1,500-$3,000.  

Requirements:

  • Preference given to students majoring in an ag - related field of study.

  • A high school transcript must accompany your application. A 2.5 or higher gpa is required.  

  • Submit a typed or printed essay in a maximum of 500 words, on what you hope to learn in your field of study to help impact the future of agriculture in your chosen field.  

Harding Family Scholarship

P.E.O. : SHELDON - CHAPTER DU, SCHOLARSHIP / DEADLINE: APRIL 15, 2025

The P.E.O.- Sheldon, Chapter Du Scholarship is awarded to a female high school senior who exhibits excellence in leadership, academics (3.0 gpa on a 4.0 scale), extracurricular activities, community service and potential for future success.  Applicants must plan to attend an accredited post-secondary educational institution. The scholarship award is $1,500.

PEO Sheldon Chapter DU Scholarship

The applications of individuals who satisfy the PEO Sheldon Chapter DU eligibility criteria will be evaluated on a nondiscriminatory basis without consideration of race, age, national origin, religious affiliation, disability or P.E.O. connection.

MOONLIGHT CREWZERS CAR CLUB SCHOLARSHIP (CAREER FIELD: AUTOMOTIVE) / DEADLINE: APRIL 15th  / AMOUNT AWARDED: $500. 

The purpose of the Sheldon Moonlight Crewzers Car Club Scholarship is to assist a deserving graduating high school student in helping finance his/her post-high automotive-based education.  Criteria:

  • Be a member in good standing of the graduating senior class of Sheldon High School

  • Continue your education in an automotive based field.

Northwest Iowa League of Cities Scholarship/ Deadline: April 15

The Northwest Iowa League of Cities Scholarship is open to any high school student residing in a community that is a member of the Northwest Iowa League of Cities, who is pursuing post-secondary education or training in a field that may result in employment by city government (i.e. public administration, water/wastewater management, law enforcement, firefighter, EMS, code enforcement, planner, public engineer, city attorney, etc.).

Five (5) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.

To apply: you will need your gpa and class rank, a list of awards and accomplishments and a list of extracurricular activities and organizational memberships.

Cooperative Energy Scholarship / Deadline: April 15, 2024

Cooperative Energy of Sibley, IA will be awarding ten (10) $1,000 scholarships to students who might be interested in a career with them down the road. Students who plan to pursue a 2- or 4-year college education or a trade school in a field that compliments the careers offered at Cooperative Energy are invited to apply. Some of these careers include:

  • Accounting and Administrative Assistants

  • Marketing and Sales

  • C-Store Managers

  • Location Managers

  • Diesel Service Technicians

  • Auto Service Technicians

  • Tire Service Technicians

  • Fuel Delivery Drivers

Loof Memorial Conservation Scholarship / May 1, 2024

The Loof Memorial Conservation Scholarship is open to students who are pursuing a degree in Conservation, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, or Agriculture at an accredited institution of Higher Education. Preference will be given to those pursuing a Conservation degree.

Other criteria: Have a minimum of a 2.0 gpa, demonstration of participation in extra-curricular activities, and a passion for conservation and related activities.

The scholarship award is $1,000
